Richey Named One of Birmingham’s Most Influential Executives by the BBJ

Van L. Richey, president and CEO of AMERICAN Cast Iron Pipe, was named among Birmingham’s Most Influential Executives this week by the Birmingham Business Journal. In a Q&A with the newspaper, Richey contributed the company’s success to its people – customers, employees and neighbors – who know the company is committed to doing business the right way.

What makes your company stand out?

We’ve been a part of the Birmingham community since 1905. Many people know us for our Golden Rule philosophy. It’s our aim – every day – to treat each other, our customers and our community the way we want to be treated.

What’s the next big thing on the horizon for your company?

We’re in the infrastructure business. We make pipe that delivers water and natural gas; and fire hydrants and pumps that protect our homes and businesses. As the country looks to invest in its infrastructure, we are ready to ensure cities and businesses have the materials they need to build strong, lasting, secure systems.

Why do you think your company has been successful? Our employees, customers and community know that we are a company that is committed to doing business the right way – caring for our employees, providing quality products at a good value to our customers, and partnering with our neighbors to build strong communities.

What’s your favorite thing about Birmingham? The people. There is a wonderful sense of community here – people committed to making Birmingham a great place to live and work. I’m proud to call Birmingham home.

What’s your philosophy on leadership? I often say, “All of us are smarter than any one of us.” It takes all of us working together, appreciating what each one of us brings to the organization, to make it work.
