Moxley Inducted Into Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame

Stephen D. Moxley

Former AMERICAN Cast Iron Pipe Company President, the late Stephen D. Moxley, was inducted into the state of Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame on Feb. 21, 2015. An engineer, innovator and leader in the mechanical engineering field, Moxley began his career at AMERICAN in 1923. He worked as a draftsman, chief engineer, assistant to the vice president of engineering, and vice president of engineering before being named president in 1955.

During his 40 years with AMERICAN, Moxley played an instrumental role in the advancement of cast iron pipe technologies and processes, including AMERICAN’s patented Mono-Cast centrifugal casting that was introduced in 1926. Moxley was recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1953 for this and other technical achievements.

Moxley received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering as well as an honorary doctorate degree of science from the University of Alabama. He also helped establish a foundry at the University’s School of Engineering for teaching foundry sciences. Other civic and professional contributions included serving on the boards of the American Foundry Society, the Engineers Club of Birmingham, the Birmingham Water Board, the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, the Salvation Army and Junior Achievement.

The Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame honors the outstanding accomplishments and contributions of individuals, projects and corporations/institutions that bring significant recognition to the state. Moxley is the fourth AMERICAN employee inducted. In 1989, the late Kenneth R. Daniel, company president from 1963 to 1978, was inducted into the Hall of Fame; former Technical Director, the late Dr. James T. MacKenzie, was inducted in 1991; and retired Vice President and Sales Manager, the late Jack W. MacKay, was inducted in 2011. AMERICAN projects inducted into the Hall of Fame include AMERICAN’s Cupola iron melting facility in 1991 and the 65-megawatt Contiarc furnace in 2002. The company was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.

AMERICAN manufactures ductile iron pipe, spiral-welded steel pipe, fire hydrants and valves for the waterworks industry and electric-resistance-welded steel pipe for the oil and natural gas industries. AMERICAN’s diversified product line also includes static castings and high-performance fire pumps.
